Day 1
excursion in Berber villages with family
Day trip to the High Atlas Mountains: remote Berber villages and the spectacular valley of Imlil
and Toubkal The Atlas Mountains and the imlil day trip is one of the most spectacular day trips
from Marrakech if you want to get out of the city and get into the authentic and rural side of
Morocco. We will begin our day trip to Imlil at 9:00 am from Marrakech in a 4WD vehicle or mini
van for 1h30 by car south of the Moulay Brahim Gorges, and the Berber village of Asni, very
popular for its weekly market all on Saturdays, then to Imlil Crossing, a vibrant green valley. It
stays fresh and exuberant even during the hottest days of summer. Imlil is a small village in the
foothills of the highest mountains in Morocco, on the Toubkal mountain. Imlil is the center for
hiring mountain guides and mules due to its unique position and its connection to several Berber
villages and a very popular starting point for hikes and treks to climb the Toubkal mountain.
Arrival to Imlil here, we will leave our vehicle and start a walk for about 1 hour southwards to the
Berber village of Aroumd (Aremd) (1843m) passing through the villages of Ait Souka, Targa and
Imoula, up and down the steep slopes , the steep peaks of the Western High Atlas of the massif of
Toubkal that we have before us: Jbels Aguelzim (3547m), Aksouâl (3847m) and Adrar Adj (3122m)
that observe us all the way. We will stop in Aroumd to visit this rather unique village in the valley
of Assif Aït Mizane, built seemingly house by house on a large spur of moraines, overlooking the
old fields of barley irrigated with barley, corn and vegetables and always surrounded by almond
trees and walnuts. From there, we will continue for another half hour to arrive at our lunch. The
wish will be served on the top of the beautiful terrace among a Berber family in the village of
Achayn. Then, you can take a short walk before returning to Marrakech.
